Press Release: PGP Corporation Partners With Clearswift
PGP CORPORATION AND CLEARSWIFT PARTNER TO INTEGRATE CONTENT FILTERING AND EMAIL ENCRYPTION FOR ENTERPRISES
Combined content filtering and email security provide solution to help enterprises meet regulatory initiatives and protect from digital threats
Palo Alto, CA/ Redwood City, CA/10 November, 2004 – PGP Corporation, a global leader in enterprise encryption solutions, and Clearswift, The MIMEsweeper Company and the world's #1 in Content Security, today announced the integration of PGP Universal's automatic, network-based encryption with Clearswift's MIMEsweeper content security solution. This integration provides an enterprise-scale solution for email compliance in an easy-to-deploy and maintain solution that allows enterprise users to encrypt, decrypt, and digitally sign proprietary and private information while being better protected from threats via the Internet.
MIMEsweeper technology counters all content security threats, including spam, viruses, worms, Trojan horses, abuse of email, porn, and loss of confidential information, while allowing companies to remain compliant and meet best practice standards. Clearswift's MIMEsweeper for SMTP 5.0 policy-based content engine passes data on to encryption solutions such as PGP Universal to help organizations comply with internal email policy and external regulations.
"We continue to develop partnerships to help our customers rapidly deploy security technologies that are transparent to the end user with centrally managed security policy," said Doug McLean, vice president of products, PGP Corporation. "Our partnership with Clearswift is an excellent example of how we can combine our respective technologies into an effective, comprehensive solution at a much lower total cost of ownership for enterprise customers."
This is a powerful partnership between two industry players. PGP technology has been a dominant force in the encryption market for more than a decade, with the addition of more than 30,000 global customers in the last 2 years. Clearswift is the leading supplier of content security technologies, providing solutions to 15,000 customers and 20 million users.
"Today, our customers are on strict timelines to comply with new global regulations concerning private health information (PHI) and other sensitive client information while they are being bombarded by increasingly severe digital threats," said Alyn Hockey, director of future products at Clearswift. "By integrating PGP Universal for encrypted, decrypted, and digitally signed email with Clearswift's policy-based content filtering and anti-virus capabilities, we have created unparalleled protection and compliance for our enterprise customers."
Some regulations require encryption of email to meet the letter of the compliance laws. If encryption is used, companies can avoid inappropriate email that can lead to legal liability for non-compliance and loss of confidential information such as customer data, proprietary plans, or intellectual property.
Clearswift's MIMEsweeper can scan email traffic based on industry-specific words and phrases. Using recursive disassembly, MIMEsweeper removes or blocks emails based on content. Then, based on policies set by the organization, MIMEsweeper passes emails to PGP Universal for encryption, decryption, and digital signatures. This level of security is often required to comply with global regulations, including the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which requires corporations to protect customer and employee PHI. Companies in those sectors need to control what customer information is sent to the outside world, which is why they need to monitor and control what is being sent by email.
This combined solution is available immediately and has been certified by PGP Quality Assurance Engineers in the company's Interoperability Laboratory, designed to ensure seamless integration at the customer site.
PGP Universal
PGP Universal automatically handles all encryption, decryption, and digital signature requirements for both gateway and end-to-end email security. Inbound encrypted email is received by Clearswift's MIMEsweeper for SMTP, routed to PGP Universal for decryption, and then forwarded to MIMEsweeper for scanning and security policy application. Outbound email security policy—based on individual sender, receiver, group, domain, content, or format—is applied by Clearswift MIMEsweeper for SMTP; email that must be secured is routed to PGP Universal for automatic key management, key look-up, encryption, and digital signature. Email that previously may have violated security policy and been quarantined can now be encrypted and safely delivered to recipients. PGP Universal reaches all existing users of standard encryption products (OpenPGP and S/MIME), securely sends to recipients without installed encryption solutions, and provides two-way policy enforcement. It is part of a suite of PGP encryption products that includes email, disk, FTP/batch, and mobile solutions.
MIMEsweeper for SMTP 5.0
MIMEsweeper for SMTP 5.0 allows consistent policy definition and enforcement, through automated policy replication. This new version incorporates a "roles-based" approach to administration too, moving mail management from back office to the front office. This allows, for example, the HR department-rather than IT-to implement company mail policy on, say, profanity, sexism, or racism. Its unique approach to system management allows for hierarchical devolvement of duties to multiple administrators. IT managers can delegate specific responsibilities, such as server monitoring, access to particular quarantine areas, and reporting, to the most appropriate administrators or department, thereby spreading the load of administration and significantly reducing the time it takes to process blocked emails.
